NaPoWriMo- Day 1: Strangers

We will never meet anyone
If we never talk to strangers.
We will never make an impact
If we are afraid to invade
Into places where we are not yet wanted.
Just because you don’t know you do
Does not mean you do not want something.

This is the way to become immortal
This is the way to be remembered.
It is only reaching out to people
Making them feel a little more welcome
In a universe where we all feel isolated.
Making a tourist feel welcome in a place
That they might never call home.

I have often said that I feel very small
My intuition insists that I am very insignificant
But when She* forces me to look them in the eyes
And she forces me to go through little introductions
And we delve directly into conversation
(You don’t speak to strangers when you’ve nothing to say)
They smile back as though they’ve been awaiting the approach.

You see, we all think that we feel like no one else does
We are conditioned to believe that we are inherently unique
In all of our fear of seeming weak and exposing our inadequacies,
We isolate ourselves from the rest of humanity.
We forget that making friends starts with the first “hello”
And the warm welcoming smiles which strangers return-
Those do not make me feel small or insignificant at all
As a matter of fact, they make me feel infinite.**

Notes on this poem: I'm really tired, this is basically a first draft. It's pretty bad, but I think it says what I want it to. Day one flowed... badly, but it did. =]
*She= my friend, Asha. She talks to strangers when I'm around.
** I'm reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower. This is admittedly a reference to it.

SIDENOTE: I'm also doing 30 days of Tumblr, Day one is My favorite song: http://fallingfaster.tumblr.com/post/488969156/day-1-your-favorite-song-fall-out-boy-dead-on
