I don't listen to much hip hop. I know that this supposedly makes me a bad black person, but i don't really care, because listening to some man who sounds like he's been smoking since he was five telling me about his experience in getting his "lollipop" licked, is not really ever going to appeal to me. Albeit, I can admit that I do bump to the beats, and I can definitely shake my money maker like somebody was bout to pay me, but I prefer some substance, now ever so rarely some substance or at least something pleasant comes out of Hip Hop, as is the case with Gym Class Heroes, Neptunes and Kid Cudi...
Gym Class Heroes has been my favorite band for about 2-3 years now, I really will defend their music as I feel that they do put thought into what they put out into the world and they are very hard working. My favorite album was "The Papercut Chronicles" because it was emotional and powerful, and actually kind of brilliant. Of course "As Cruel as School Children" was pretty epic because it has all the fun songs that people dance to, like "Clothes off!!!" and "The Queen and I," though it had less substance than the first album, as well as "For the kids..." it was really enjoyable. The Fusion of these was of course "The Quilt," with all the big players in the biz, and was completely amazing.
The Neptunes to me, or Pharrel is all fun. I pretty much have been in love with him since he put out "Frontin' " which is to this day my jam! Of course now he's involved in N.E.R.D. which, as a nerdfighter is like the coolest thing ever, and his song "Rock Star" is like this ridiculously hot mix of hip hop and rock...
Now we have Kid Cudi with his new hit "Day N Night" blowing up the charts, which is a helluva lot of substance as well as listenability, I like it, I've downloaded the mixtape and can't wait to see what else he's playing with. :)
